Lorentz National Park is representative of the most complete ecosystem for biodiversity in Southeast Asia and the Pacific. This area is also one of the three regions in the world that has a glacier in the tropics. Stretching from snow-capped mountain peaks (5,030 meters above sea level), to stretch out to the coastal waters with mangrove forests and borders the Arafura Sea waters. In this stretch, there are astonishing ecological spectrum of regional alpine vegetation, sub-alpine, montane, sub-montane, lowland, and wetlands.
Besides having a very high biological diversity, there are also some peculiarities and uniqueness of the glaciers on Puncak Jaya and a river that disappears a few kilometers into the ground in the Valley Balliem.
The types of plants in national parks, among others palm (Nypa fruticans), mangroves (Rhizophora apiculata), Pandanus julianettii, Colocasia esculenta, Avicennia marina, Podocarpus pilgeri, and Nauclea coadunata.
The types of animals that have been identified in the Lorentz National Park as many as 630 species of birds (± 70% of the birds in Papua) and 123 species of mammals. Bird species characteristic of this national park, there are two types of cassowary, four megapodes, 31 species of doves / pigeons, 30 species of cockatoo, 13 species of birds of shrimp, 29 species of birds honey, and 20 kinds of endemic among birds of paradise long tail (Paradigalla caruneulata) and snow quail (Anurophasis monorthonyx).
Recorded among other species of mammals pig snout long spines (Zaglossus bruijnii), pig spines short muzzle (Tachyglossus aculeatus), 4 types of couscous, wallabies, forest cats and tree kangaroos.
A total of 34 types of vegetation including swamp forest, riverside forest, sago forest, peat forest, coral sand beaches, rain forest land flat / downhill, rain forest on the hills, heath forest, mountain forests, grasslands, and lichens.
